Learning to Manage Your Health and Well Being

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of wellnessdaily.com. All opinions are 100% mine.

Have you been struggling to manage a healthy lifestyle? It can be difficult to break bad habits while implementing healthy activities and diet changes, but in my opinion the most difficult part of living healthy is keeping that momentum going.

I can't tell you how many times I've started a new diet or exercise program only to fail again and again. I think where I usually get it wrong is that I tend to fall into the mindset of thinking of my lifestyle changes as just a temporary adjustment to what is my norm, in order that I might reach a weight loss goal, when what I really need to do is think in terms of overall health and longevity. Case in point, I usually do pretty good for about 12 weeks, at which time I'm usually pretty satisfied with what my scale tells me and either decide I deserve a break or that I look "good enough" for now. lol Nice huh? What about my overall health? I usually don't even think about it. What a shame. I think at 38 I need to reevaluate my situation and educate myself on what it takes to maintain my health, rather than just going on crash diets a couple times a year. My overall health and well being is worth a little effort after all. lol

So, maybe that is why I need www.wellnessdaily.com?  This online community offers news on healthy living, weight loss, exercise, and good mental health. You'll find healthy recipes, breakfast ideas, information on cholesterol, junk food addiction, farmer's markets, stretching and simple exercises and so much more! A healthy lifestyle shouldn't just be about trying to lose weight, it should be a life change that finds a permanent place in your life. This website is all about teaching you how to do just that. It's not simply a weight loss portal, it's packed with information on living well!

I love online communities supporting health and wellness. I was a member of one a few years ago, spending an hour or better there each day, sharing my struggles, reading the advice and struggles of others, and feeling connected to people who could relate to me. That support helped me shed 20 lbs and I was so disappointed when that website ceased to be. Maybe WellnessDaily.com will take the place of that long lost accountability partner and friend?

I'd like to encourage you to check out this website. While you're there be sure to learn about the Jennie-O Turkey Store $5.00 product rebate! Did I mention they have coupons there? lol Lately I've been a bit coupon crazy. I could tell you some stories, but I'll save that for another time. :)

Blessings!

Sensory Toy Giveaway

Why so many giveaways lately? lol I hope you're enjoying them. I can't really say why I've been spending so much time searching them out, but I do love to win things, so guess I though you might too? lol Also... I will selfishly admit that I have earned an extra entry by sharing this giveaway with you! lol

This giveaway is for a sensory toy, which by the way are great for special needs children, but honestly any child would have a great time playing with these colorful 4" balls.

The mommy blogger hosting this giveaway happens to have a special needs son who has enjoyed playing with this toy and who can blame him? lol I think I'd even have fun with these. They look like they'd be fun to touch don't they?

This sensory toy is being offered by a special needs mom, but I don't think you have to have a special needs child to qualify. The requirements for entry are pretty simple, but you must reside in either the US or Canada. Also... and this is important, your entry must be submitted no later than March 31st, which is just a couple days away!

Make Finding Your Next Apartment Child's Play

If you're currently looking for an apartment for yourself or a grown child leaving home for the first time, check out a great online resource with LuxuryApartmentShop.com.

This site prides itself on being the best on the web for apartment searches. They dedicate long hours and a lot of hard work to bring you all the latest Luxury Apartments as they're listed, giving you more time to focus on your move, and less time to worry about where you'll move to. Find your best fit, the apartment you've been looking for quicker, with less effort than what you might be expecting.

You can search nationwide, and better yet, you'll find each apartment scored, based on it's number of amenities, or "luxuries" if you will. If you're looking for something very special, this site will become your new friend for sure!

The last time I went looking for an apartment was back in 1996, way before people had the luxury of a website like this one to guide in their searching. My hunt was limited to the newspaper and the advice of friends and that led me down several dead ends before I found something suitable and in my price range. It was rather stressful, especially in a college town where you couldn't drive 2 blocks without spotting another apartment complex.

Today's apartment search is easy as pie and with photos and ratings to boot! Are we spoiled or what? lol We definitely are. With LuxuryApartmentShop.com we can compare floor plans, view multiple photos, compare amenities, and so forth all on a super-simple, user-friendly website.

So, whether you're searching for Miami Luxury Apartments or something in Dallas, you're all set!

Home Based Business Directory

Hey homeschooling entrepreneurs! I have a variety of Work From Home ventures going at any given time and they're all either self-made opportunities or discoveries I made while researching online. You have to be really careful if you go about finding an opportunity or a job online and the more resources you have for researching a possible fit or legitimacy of an opportunity or offer the better!

I found something this afternoon that has sparked my interest. Not only for seeking out additional income, but possibly for promoting what I'm already doing with other women who are looking to work from home. It's hard to find a good platform for doing this, that doesn't appear pushy or down right tacky, but the home-based business site I'm currently looking at seems like a great place to hang that hat.

Given my son is on the autism spectrum, I do hope to Work at Home as long as he might need me. We don't know what his dependency on us will look like long-term, so it's been a true blessing to have found a few things I can do at home and take a bit of the pressure off the family.

I'm always keeping my peepers open for a Home Business that my entire family could be a part of too... maybe I'll find something at The Home Business Bug!

By the way, I haven't researched anything listed on this site and cannot garauntee the legitimacy of anything listed there, but do recommend it as a starting point. Be sure to fully research any business opportunity or job offer before jumping on board!

Good luck to you!

Melissa & Doug Floor Puzzle Giveaway!

I found this giveaway and can only imagine how many of my readers might have puzzle-loving children at home. I didn't enter this myself, since my kids are 7 and 8 and onto the smaller pieced puzzles with 100 or more pieces, but because I really like this particular puzzle did want to provide my readers with the link to entering the giveaway themselves.

Check it out at Energizer Bunny's Mommy Reports blog where Marina is offering a Melissa and Doug 48 piece floor puzzle that measures over 4 feet long! It's theme is "Under the Sea" and will no doubt make a great gift for any child aged 3 or older who loves assembling puzzle and/or who loves looking at vivid pictures of the Sea and the bounty of life it supports.

I'm new to Energizer Bunny's Mommy Reports' blog, but it looks like a fun place to visit. Here's her button... if you're interested:

The button seems fitting too... given we're so close to Easter. Not that everyone thinks in terms of bunnies at Easter, but they're sort of hard to avoid. I've found myself literally tripping over them in the isles of Walmart and CVS so guessing there must a whole lot of mommies stuffing Easter baskets about this time of the year! lol

I love giveaways and may be hosting one of my own very soon. I'm trying to decide what to giveaway and what type of theme my giveaway should have. So many choices, so little time. lol

Two Amazing Hotels in the Heart of Branson

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Hiltons of Branson. All opinions are 100% mine.

Have you been to the Lake of the Ozarks lately? More specifically have you been to Branson? I have a friend who's taking her family to Branson this very weekend and another who just got back. We're situated not so very far from this hot spot of entertainment, shopping, golfing, great restaurants and all sorts of attractions... so it's hard to find the individual who is at least not familiar with what Branson has to offer individuals and families alike. We're only a few hours away, making it convenient to drive down just for the weekend, but we've also talked about vacationing there in the near future..

If you're looking for a fun and relaxing getaway, a place where you can shop, your spouse can play a round of golf, your kids can take in the many museums and theme parks... look no further than Branson, Missouri! Your next step will be finding a hotel... and you'll want to look no further than the Hilton Promenade at Branson Landing or the Hilton Branson Convention Center. Both hotels are just minutes from the heart of all that makes Branson the great getaway that it is. By the way, do you have a dog you're not sure what to do with? Bring him along! Both hotels offer pet accommodations within designated hotel rooms, even offering dog beds, for your furry friends not exceeding 75 lbs. Pretty cool for a top-notch hotel, wouldn't you say?

So what will you do in Branson? You've probably heard of Silver Dollar City, but did you know that Branson is also hosting the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament? You'll also find the upcoming Branson Best Boat and Recreation Show, a series of unforgettable concerts at the Branson Landing with popular musical guests such as 65 South and The Mark Chapman Band. Branson will even host auditions for David Letterman's Stupid Human and Pet Tricks! lol Whether you have a trick to share or not, watching the auditions might provide for a whole lot of  family-friendly fun!

The Hilton Promenade at Branson Landing and the Hilton Branson Convention Center offer all sorts of packages and special offers depending on what you're looking for and when you're booking your stay. For example, they've teamed up with The Payne Stewart Golf Club to offer a unique package catering to those looking to practice their swing while staying at the hotel.

They also offer a Bed and Breakfast Package and a Romance Package. Sound good? Whatever you're looking for Hilton Promenade at Branson Landing or the Hilton Branson Convention Center will have you covered! So, what are you waiting for? Spring is the perfect time to plan your trip away. It's time to put away the Winter and bring out your active, spontaneous, wanna see it, wanna do it Springtime attitude! Have fun!

Spring is Here and it's Time to Learn All About Birds! A Great Learning Website

Website: All About Birds

A friend of mine with little ones at home (preschool aged) found this fun and exciting teaching site dedicated to the thrill of learning about birds. I have to admit that I'm somewhat of a bird watcher myself, but at the same time will confess that 9 times out of 10 have no clue what I'm seeing out my front window! lol

We've been seeing a lot of Cardinals and Blue Jays lately, but scores of other birds have also been visiting our pear tree in the front yard and the little bare bushes surrounding the base of our home. It's a lot of fun to watch them hop around, dance through the branches of our still naked tree, and tweet at one another in their special way. We especially get excited when the more colorful birds come for a visit, since we have yet to see Spring bring forth any other forms of color and in fact had another snowfall just yesterday! Needless to say, we weren't amused.

Would you like to teach your homeschooled children all about the beauty of birds? Would you like to learn where America's birds live season to season? What they sound like? What they're behavior looks like, and what type of habitat they gravitate too?

One of the prettiest little birds I've come across on this site is the Eastern Bluebird. The adult male carries a beautiful shade of blue that you won't want to miss! I'd love to see this little guy sitting in my front yard waiting for some unsuspecting insect to crawl by. lol

Here is a beautiful photo of one of my all time favorites... the Blue Jay... which as I mentioned before we've been seeing a lot of just as of late. Just gorgeous! I had to include his mugshot in this post. Blue has always been one of my favorite colors, anytime of year, but especially in the Winter and Spring I love to see these colorful birds visit our home. They're a gift from God on an otherwise cloudy and gray day.

We saw a Blue Jay in our church parking lot this morning and my son asked if we could take him home with us. lol Of course we let him be (not that we could have caught him anyway)... but we thought it was cool that he was so interested in the sweet little gift from above. :o)

THB Book Review of The Raindrop by Brian D. McClure

I was recently asked by The Cadence Group to review a new book titled "The Raindrop" in exchange for a free copy! What a deal, wouldn't you say? I love sharing book reviews with my readers, so I was completely on board for this assignment.

My 7 year old daughter was first to read the book and in fact grabbed it from my desk only minutes after I took it from the manila mailing envelope. She was quick to share that she especially loved the beautiful artwork created by illustrator Buddy Plumlee. The sad looking raindrop on the cover gave her immediate concern and sympathy before she even opened the book... she wondered why he was so down.

Turns out the raindrop is suffering from the all too familiar feeling of  low self-esteem. He feels he has no worth or value in the world. As he falls from sky to earth, there seems to be no point in the journey and no hope for a purposeful conclusion. Overhearing his moaning, a cloud tries to convince him that despite his small size, he's part of the water system and should be proud of the life giving role he plays. Caught up in his feelings of worthlessness he hears nothing the cloud had to say and continues on his way towards a very dry and thirsty ground that will soon swallow him up.

From that point on... the raindrop has a few life changing adventures, from traveling through the ground, being shot out a garden hose, being absorbed into the stalk and leaf of a plant and eventually experiences the joy of evaporation, as he travels back towards the sky where he'd be free to relive his amazing journey again. Upon finding his way back to the sky, the raindrop hears the depressing moans of a cloud sharing his lack of worth in the world, to which a happy raindrop shares the joy and purpose of being part of the life giving water system.

The book concludes with a message for the young reader... that he/she is a great gift to the world, connected to and a part of the world as a whole. It's a book about purpose, community, and feeling good about who you are!

This is a fun, rhyming book with beautiful illustrations and a lesson readers of all ages will appreciate. My 7 year old daughter and yours truly recommend this book and give it 10 fingers out of a possible 10 fingers! lol My little girl even gave it a few toes. :)

Happy reading! If you'd like to order the book for yourself or your favorite little reader, click on the storybook photo at the start of this post. :o)

Noah's Ark Hot Air Balloon Photos!

I found these beautiful photos online this evening while looking for something else and have to say that it's probably the coolest hot air balloon I've ever seen. You'll find these and other hot air balloon photos here. If your kids are like mine, they're going to get a real kick out of this! My kids are in bed (finally), but I plan on sharing this with them in the morning. Pretty cool wouldn't you say?

We have hot air balloons nearby on occasion, but they're always just the standard balloon, with the only variances being in color and pattern. I had no clue there were actually shaped balloons. lol I'd love to see this float past my house!

One day last year a balloon landed just about 200 feet from my house... it was so close to our rooftop, then our neighbors home that I had to wonder if they were in trouble, but apparently they did land safely. :)

Houston Rodeo and Big Names in Music!

Maybe you have a big rodeo fan in the family, but you've never gone because it's not really your thing... then again, maybe seeing the Black Eyed Peas or Toby Keith is? lol Given that the Houston Rodeo offers more than your everyday rodeo event, you might just want to consider surprising someone with tickets! Oh, and be sure they know you'll be coming along too! lol

The Houston Rodeo is currently underway, but there are still many nights left to take in the action. In other words, there's still time to experience a real live rodeo hear some of your favorite musical artists. If your kids have never been to a rodeo, this might be the time to go. Most rodeos don't offer concerts after the show, but Houston does things differently. lol With the brick and mortar schools taking Spring breaks right about now, maybe throw in a field trip of sorts and take the family to the rodeo?  Your kids will feel like they're getting a break of sorts too... only better. This would make for a lot of interesting conversation later and might possibly make for a great research paper later too!

If you're interested in checking out ticket prices, you'll be glad to know the price range starts low... depending of course on how close to the action you'd like to be. The lowest prices are reasonable... if you're looking for front row, your jaw might drop, but if you're a big rodeo fan, maybe not so much! There's a seat for everyone... so whether you're having a great year financially or have been struggling just a bit, you'll want to at least take a look at Houston Rodeo Tickets!

This is one of those events I wouldn't have immediately thought to consider, but when I saw the lineup of famous musical guests, I had second thoughts. There's nothing wrong with rodeo's necessarily, but it's not something I've spent much time thinking about... I'm not part of that culture I guess. Still, I wouldn't mine going one year. If I ever were going to attend a rodeo, I think Houston would be my first choice! I've never been to Texas... so that's one reason I say this, but the other being that it sounds like fun!

This rodeo also includes a livestock show... again not the culture I'm living in, but I am curious about it. I'm a city girl... not much country in me, but this mouse wouldn't mind seeing how the country mice have fun. Plus, most of us have children who love animals, do we not? I guarantee your kids won't soon forget this show!

Follow Me to a Giveway for Merrell Chameleon Arc Gore-Tex XCR Hiking Shoes!

Seriously cool! Who couldn't use a well made pair of hiking shoes to kick of Spring in a big way? I found this giveaway on Canadian Natural Mama's blog, entered as many times as they'd allow, and now I'm here to share the giveaway with my readers. I wish I could offer a giveaway this cool here on The Homeschooling Blog, but confess I have no clue how to attract such cool sponsors as Merrell! lol

One thing I especially found attractive about this shoe, from the Canadian Natural Mama's blog's description was that she wears these while running errands with a baby on her back. lol You really need shoes with good traction to do that. I don't have any great shoes at the moment, and given I care for my 2 year old niece, who can't walk I really could use these shoes. I end up carrying her a lot, especially when taking her to and from the van.

If you'd like to join me in trying to win these shoes... visit Canadian Natural Mama's blog and check out all the ways you can get your name in the mix. You'll be given multiple chances to win, so be sure to check them all out before 9 PM on April 3rd! This giveaway is open only to citizens of the US and Canada.

Good luck!

Ready to Start Living Healthy?

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of wellnessdaily.com. All opinions are 100% mine.

I'm so frustrated with myself after recently gaining back 8 of the 13 lbs I lost last Fall. Do I know how I gained it back? Sure I do! Do I know how to lose it again? Yes, but as you probably already know, losing weight and staying healthy requires a lot more than just knowing how.

I think staying healthy and keeping your shape require several key components including but not limited to having an accountability partner, having a wide variety of meal options, learning healthy strategies to dealing with stress, and re-learning how to living in a world of convenience... meaning skip the convenience foods and plan ahead.

www.wellnessdaily.com is an online guide designed to help you improve your health, while finding and maintaining a healthy body weight through information-packed articles, healthy recipes, coupons and fun promotions. I'm there now looking at a promotion for a contest offering money towards a gym membership. Do you know why I don't currently have a gym membership? I can't afford one. I've been planning on joining the YMCA since my last birthday some 5 months ago and yet haven't been able to make the financial commitment. I tell myself I'll take a walk instead, but we've had a horrible Winter and now that the weather is beginning to warm I have that same intention... to walk, so we'll see what happens! Still, having a gym membership would be wonderful. I'd especially love to swim and take a spinning class, oh but I dream!

I'm also looking at an article on dancing your way to fitness, which actually does work and might I say that if you have little one's at home, dancing to "Imagination Movers" is a really good work out... if you do it right! lol This article isn't about dancing to children's television shows, but I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents, just for fun. Actually, it's about taking a dance class and  how dance training changes your body. Did you know an hour of intense dancing can burn as much as 400 calories? That's the kind of information I'm here at WellnessDaily.com to learn about! That's the stuff motivation is built on!

If you're interested in joining WellnessDaily.com, now is the time... sign up and enter the Twitter contest where you could win coupons for a year's supply of Jennie-O Turkey product and a full year gym membership! Hey, I don't even have a Twitter account, but this might be reason enough to start one! lol

What's the Best Homeschool Curriculum for Children with Aspergers?

I'm sharing the small amount of information I already know (about my own Aspie) on this subject as well as requesting your thoughts. If you've homeschooled a child on the autism spectrum, specifically a child with Asperger's, then I have a personal interest in hearing what you have to share. If you're seeking information as so many of us are... I hope something I share here will be beneficial.

What I'm specifically wondering about tonight is whether any of my readers are familiar with Larel Springs? They actually offer a homeschooling program recommended for children with Aspergers. Seems unusual that such a thing would exist and I'm eager to learn more about it. I have no clue what this program costs... it's considered a private school, which immediately makes me see dollar signs, but I'm going to look at it anyway. Can't hurt, right? I'm also not certain whether they'll cater any of their homeschooling classes for aspies, or if there's a specific line of classes for these special students.

My son has been homeschooled with My Father's World and K12 curriculum and done well with both. What he didn't do well with was the unstructured environment of being at home with mom. Our homeschooling career was riddled with problems and currently he's in public school. I have a hunch that I'll one day be bringing him home again and consequently do a bit of research from time to time trying to determine the best course of action to take when he re-enters the homeschooling world.

I had always said I'd go back to K12, but if there were a curriculum developed for kids on the spectrum?? Hmmm... would that be a good thing or a bad thing? The bigger question for me... if the lack of structure at home is in fact the real problem, then does it really matter what curriculum we use? Won't our struggles look the same regardless?

Here's what I can share, at least about my own son. He does best with short lessons, frequent breaks and routine. If he knows what to expect, how long it will take, and that he'll be able to get up from the table and focus on something else after about 20 minutes, we do much better. If he hits a roadblock, meaning he doesn't understand something, he shuts down and decides he either hates the lesson or that it's "stupid" and won't cooperate at all. I could see that happening with virtually any curriculum and could also see that possibly being more a personality thing than an Aspie one??

Finally, I suppose we need to decide what our goals for our children are, before we know what approach to take. Do we want them to be something they can't be? Are we trying to make them look and function like the rest of the world? I think one of the reasons we failed was that I was trying to do just that. I wanted him to master every lesson and he just couldn't do it. Some subjects he soared in while others seemed to go nowhere day after day.

I guess I have more questions than answers and unfortunately one of the challenges with kids on the spectrum is that no two are exactly alike. lol Oh... well, I guess that makes them human right? Seriously though, they may have the same diagnosis, but face different challenges and respond very differently to the approach you take in schooling them.

As for my son, he's currently doing very well, so long as the school gives him the breaks he needs... even during testing, oh and they allow him to take his tests outside the classroom in a more isolated environment. This has helped him too, which tells me outside stimulation is definitely a factor. He's also given some help getting his homework together... which he has a history of forgetting, then freaking out at night with worry about what will come the next day. Poor guy. Anxiety is not his friend.

Ok.... didn't mean to write a book here, and I fear I'm rambling on and on! So, I'll share more and ask more later!

Weather Forcast Giving you Grief?

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of AccuWeather. All opinions are 100% mine.

How many times a day do you look at your local forcast? Seriously? If you're like me you base a significant amount of your planning around what the weatherman says... and since the weatherman isn't on 24/7 sharing your local forcast, you likely have an online source for your weather information... I'm guessing it's your homepage? How's that working for you?

How about that weather anyway? Is it really the weather giving you grief or not knowing what to expect that has you so frustrated? Not knowing what to wear, how much to wear, whether or not you should even go out at all... will you get stuck in a blizzard? Should you grab an umbrella? Is your new car better off left in the garage or is it a good day to go give it a bath? lol What about next week? How accurate is the forcast you're following today?

When you're a mom the weather makes even a bigger impact on your life. Planning birthday parties at the park or at a pizza establishment, knowing whether to have that playdate at the park or the mall, or deciding whether you need to reschedule that trip to the dentist office. Last thing you want is to get stuck in a thunderstorm.

So, what's a mom to do? Why not take checking up on what mother nature has in store to a whole new level? You might actually enjoy this, so hold onto your many mommy hats. Accuweather.com not only offers you the forcast, but you'll also find areas on lifestyle and weather... such as health and weather, travel... and weather, outdoor activity... and uh, weather. lol You'll find it simple and fun to plan your next outing, know just how to dress, know weather, uh I mean whether you should take the dog along, whether to grab those boots or your favorite heals and you'll never miss a beat!

I really like AccuWeather and it's layout... everything is easy to find, whether I'm just wanting a simple forcast, radar and maps, maybe a weather blog or perhaps to track a blizzard under their extreme conditions category... it's all there. The images are colorful and bold and the information is top-notch. I've found my new stomping grounds for planning my days... especially  with Summer getting closer and closer... I'm relieved to have found such an excellent online resource for weather!

The Hard Reality of Homeschooling... Looking at the Stats

The reality of homeschooling is that statistically speaking homeschooled students outperform public schooled children in every subject, regardless of income level, nationality, region of the country, or choice of curriculum. Don't believe me? It's all in black and white at HSLDA's website, plain as day. Research proves what we already knew... brick and mortar can't compete what we can do at home!

There's just no comparison to the one-on-one approach we give our children when we choose to homeschool. We meet them at their level, which in time is almost always a step ahead of their peers, and we let them progress at a pace that is comfortable to them. We know personally all their strengths and weaknesses, where to give that extra 20 minutes of attention or where to direct their focus should they need a little encouragement or push to succeed.

I strongly encourage you to take a look at Academic Statistics on Homeschooling. If you're already homeschooling it will remind you of why you chose this unconventional path. If you're contemplating homeschooling, you'll find great support to help you make a decision and if you're trying to convince your spouse to jump on board with this idea... you'll find all the ammunition necessary to argue your case. lol

Good luck!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Just under the wire too! lol I intended on sharing this Happy Birthday wish earlier today, but sadly it fell last on my list of priorities. Still... here I am!

So, if you're a Dr. Seuss fan, or parent to one, share this site (site plays music... if you're at work, have a napping baby or studying student, turn your speakers down before you click!):

Dr.Seuss.com

Learn a bit about Dr. Seuss who was Born on March 2nd, 1904 and then go play some games and do a little reading. While you're there, sign up for the Seusville News!

As it so happens I made a Dr. Seuss cake just the other day for a friend of a friend's baby shower. So... thought I'd share it with you here... it's not the traditional red and white hat you've come to be so familiar with, but rather pink and white... fitting for a baby girl!

So, what is your favorite Dr. Seuss story? There are so many, some that weren't even around when we were kids! Did you know not all the books in the Seuss collection were actually written by Dr. Seuss? My kids have a handful by newer authors. All are great reads and I love the unique style of the characters in each book.

Dr. Seuss died in 1991, but we can all continue to admire his amazing talent for bringing smiles and giggles to children and adults alike! Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!!
