Summer, Spring, Winter, Fall... It's Always Pizza Season at Our House

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Freschetta. All opinions are 100% mine.

We had pizza for lunch today, a pizza buffet on Friday and carryout the Sunday before. Even through the hot, humid days of Summer, my family never turns down the opportunity to eat pizza. We especially love thin and crispy crust like that of Freschetta.

Baking pizza at home is a real treat... which is what we did today. Have you tried Freschetta Zesty Italian, the Roasted Garlic and Spinach, perhaps their Pepperoni or maybe their 5-Cheese pizzas? Can I recommend the Zesty Italian? Did you  know you can print a $1 coupon for any Freschetta pizza from Freschetta's website? It's true! I just did! Oh, and did you further know you can share the coupon link straight from their website on Facebook so all your peeps can print their own coupons? All moms love coupons... you know it's true.

Freschetta Pizza starts out with a natural rising Freschetta FlatBread , and only gets better from there. The toppings will delight every last bud you have for tasting! I'm sorry if I'm ruining your diet by sharing this, but if you like crispy pizza... you really do need to give Freschetta a try! Tasty!

The cool thing about having these pizzas on hand is they're quick and convenient, cheaper than carryout or delivery and are guaranteed to please the entire family. I can't tell you how many times I've cooked a meal (from scratch no less) and one of my kids moans at me. Yes, I know what you're thinking... you've been there more times than you can count. Occasionally it's sorta nice to have dinner made simple and not hear one complaint out of anyone! lol Thanks Freschetta for those happy dinner memories! lol

"Memorize in Minutes" for Teaching Multiplication?

Any thoughts on Memorize in Minutes by Krimsten Publishing?

I'm reading about this method now, which uses pictures and rhymes to help children memorize multiplication facts and really feeling tempted to give it a try. My 9 year old son is on the autism spectrum which may or may not explain his challenges with certain types of memorization, but this really seems like something he might take to. Especially given he has such a silly side, and given that many autistic kids do marvelously well with picture stories, when being taught social and real life learning skills. Maybe pictures and rhymes could teach math too?

My son still cannot tie his shoes, ride a bike without training wheels, and has a horrible time with math. Such that, he's decided he hates the subject inside and out. This is a problem. He doesn't let me instruct him in this subject because he can't stand to "not get it". Does that make sense? If something doesn't make sense to him, he avoids it. This same kid is testing at the 8th grade reading level and received a 97% on his state reading assessment. He's smart, but he's fighting against a disability which affects his ability to inference and sometimes focus. He's also suffering from an anxiety disorder which means when he faces a challenge, we often find him overwhelmed in tears and sometimes rage, which isn't exactly conducive to learning.

So, I wonder if anyone has any experience with "Memorize in Minutes" and if so what that experience has been? I'm 95% sure I'm going to purchase this and if/when I do, I'll let you know how things go. If it does work with a special needs child, it would probably work for others... even those not on the spectrum.

I'm trying to decide if I should just order the student download or if I need the entire program which is sent via snail mail and includes a teacher's manual, flashcards, quizzes, and lesson plans. The high point is the program is on sale for $20. Hard to imagine how I could go wrong at that price! lol  I'll let you know what I decide!

Another Free eBook Resource for Classic Literature

Recently I shared Project Gutenburg here on THB with my readers. Today I came across another great FREE eBook resource. Anytime I run across something that's both useful and FREE from which my visitors might benefit I share it!

Planet eBook offers classic literature available for immediate download for use in your homeschool classroom, or just for general reading purposes. Whether it be you or your children looking for a classic read, or you yourself, you'll find everything from Frankenstein to Oliver Twist!

Eventually I promise to have a links list here at THB where we can easily locate all the great resources I've shared here over the years. I can't even always remember what I've posted or where to find it! lol My time management skills could use a bit of sprucing up and I have yet to find someone to help me with that. At 38 I'm thinking it's not something I'm going to figure out on my own! Like a failed diet, I do great for a day, then immediately fall back into my old habits, which although don't exactly produce the best results, are more comfortable and come more natural than doing things in a way that makes sense! lol

Picking my battles and enjoying a classic read. Join me?

Ken Block Hoodies, Hat's and Tees

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of PacSun. All opinions are 100% mine.

”Pacific

If you're a Ken Block fan, you'll be excited to visit the PacSun site offering Ken Block and Ford's collaboration line from DC Shoes. The new line of clothing sports Ken's new Ford Fiesta rally car's artwork. It's bound to be a sweet gift for some devoted racing fan. It's also just really cool looking apparel. So you'll feel as good buying it as they do wearing it.

I like the DC Shoes Ken Block Ford Flex hat best amongst the Ken Block Gear. I like the two-toned black and embroidered logos! It's really sharp.

Ken Block is actually the co-founder of DC Shoes! I bet you didn't even know this. This makes his line of gear even more attractive. Don't you think? It's sharp looking... that's for sure!

I'm not a huge racing fan (somehow feel the need to mention that, lol), but I did grow up watching it... because well, my dad was into it. I always felt like we were just waiting for a crash as the cars made their laps around the massive track. It's amazing how those cars (and the drivers inside) fair when the cars go flying through the air, rolling and sometimes even burning. Or... at least that's what I remember!

It's an exhilarating sport for those watching, that I do remember well. As an adult I'm just hoping my own son doesn't ever have an interest in racing cars... lol... watching them race, well ok, but not racing them!

Have fun watching the video below. It's short and shows what a drive looks like from the driver's perspective. I think I'll stick to my mini van. :)

Tips for Taking a 2 Year Old to the Movies

If you're a mom or care giver for a toddler you'll appreciate this post! I watch my young niece during the day... who by the way is a physically disabled. At the tender age of just 2 1/2 she doesn't walk, but they are planning a surgery that might be able to help her. I'll keep you posted on that news as it continues to develop.

In any case, last week I wanted to take my own children (ages 7 and 9) to see one of the Summer movies offered through a program offered here through Dickinson Theaters, providing very affordable movie viewing if we go at the right time of the day and see the films they've selected for us! lol They're all movies that came out last year or in previous years, but we've not seen most... so no big deal right? The only challenge was what to do about their 2 year old cousin who is easily freaked by anyone or anything bearing an angry  or scary face (who can blame her for that) and who has yet to make it through a Disney movie without crying over the appearance of a villain.

So, we had a couple problems to contend with.... keep her happy, keep her still, keep her quite! lol All things any mom or care giver would concern themselves with when taking a young child to a theater. Here's what I did... maybe it could work for you?

I brought the following in my take along tote:
  • 2  juice boxes and 2 water bottles (for obvious reasons... my kids had the water, their cousin the juice)
  • 3 Ziplock bags (for redistributing purchased popcorn amongst the kiddos... and me)
  • A baby blanket (for hiding from any scary cartoon faces or voices... works best if you hide with them! Make it a game.)
  • Skittles or M&M's (distributed one at a time) to 2 year old anytime I sensed she'd lost interest and was looking for an Exit
Also... I was prepared to carry her just outside the theater doors where my kids could catch up with us should she have a meltdown. I brought with me a Leapster game system (something she loves, but only comes out a few minutes a day... making it special) I knew if worse came to worse, she'd be entertained and quiet and my kids could finish their movie.

The outcome? It actually went pretty well. Despite some popcorn on the floor and a lot of time under the blanket, she seemed to enjoy her first movie on the silver screen. During the last 5 minutes of the film, I had to pick her up and walk her towards the back of the theater, as I thought she was done, but just as we approached the doors she regained an interest in the film so we stood and watched the last few moments.

Hopefully something I've shared here gives you some ideas on how to survive a movie with your own toddler! One thing I forgot to mention... be sure they take a nap BEFORE you leave. My little niece slept for about an hour just before lunch, then we hit the theater and by the time we were home, she was ready for another nap! lol

Good luck!

Hotels in Los Gatos California

We vacation a couple weeks out of the year, usually in November, staying at a hotel is just part of the experience. I've stayed in my fair share of resorts and hotels and can share that the most important features making a room worth returning to are clean and working bathrooms, a refrigerator in the room, and clean bedding. If you don't have those 3 things going for you, then I probably won't return with my family!

I'll also say that a hotel room should smell nice and the air conditioning/heating should be top notch.

I suppose my expectations sound simple! lol If I were to dream of the perfect room it would resemble what I've seen at Toll House hotel... check out their rooms for los gatos california! Wow is all I can say... this would be a luxury vacation like I've never known and I'd almost hate to leave my hotel room during my stay! I can't imagine how amazing it would be to spend 2 weeks... even 2 nights in one of these rooms. Beautiful!

FriendGiftr Makes Gift Card Giving Even Easier!

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of FriendGiftr. All opinions are 100% mine.

Father's Day is almost here... have you done your shopping yet? Maybe you don't know what to get dad or your hubby, but you do know where he likes to shop. If you're still blessed to have your dad around, be sure not to forget him. If he's anything like mine, he's incredibly hard to shop for, but you know he'd have no trouble finding something at his favorite retailer. That means a gift card might just be the way to go!

I love that I can purchase gift cards for my favorite people without leaving my home and with over 135 merchants to choose from, there's something for everyone on my list. FriendGiftr allows you to shop directly from their website, Facebook, your iPhone or Blackberry... or perhaps your Android, if that's what you carry! lol Whatever your method, you've never found an easier way to buy gift cards.

You'll find favorite restaurants and retailers and what's more... if you get that part of it wrong... let's say you choose Cabela's and your favorite uncle really prefers AMC Theaters? He can easily exchange it through FriendGiftr without any trouble or hassles... meaning it's free for him to do! Also... he won't have to worry about making you feel bad, because he won't have to tell you or get your permission to exchange his gift card for another retailer. Pretty cool huh?

Gift cards are one of my favorite things to receive and with this easy service, they're one of my favorite things to give too. Did you know you can personalize your gift too? Go check out the service and be sure and bookmark the page so you'll not loose track of it! Happy giftcard giving! Now... go get that Father's Day shopping done before you run out of time. :)

Homeschoolers Looking to Guest Post & Share on THB

I had a brainchild today while trying to find some interesting content to share with my readers. Given that well runs dry from time to time and given that soooo many homeschoolers work from home, own a blog, offer a service or product, I thought it might be a wonderful compromise to offer anyone wishing to provide a guest post here on The Homeschooling Blog with free button space for a month (125x125 or 180x150)!

If you wish to provide a guest post every month (that would be sweet!), I'll keep your button up as long as you keep the guest posts coming. The topic can be that of your choosing, so long as it somehow pertains to homeschooling. You can share a struggle, a triumph, a day in the life of, a technique or curriculum you've found beneficial. It's up to you! As an extra bonus, you may even link back to your own site from the post itself, so long as it's limited to just one link. Remember.... you'll have the button in the sidebar too! Your guest post should be between 150 and 300 words.

If you're interested in further discussing this proposal with me, please contact me welindsey (at) gmail (dot) com and place "guest posting on THB" in the subject line of your email. That way, I'll be sure not to miss it.

All links must belong to family-friendly sites, may not contain spam, or questionable material, and are subject to approval by THB before being published to this blog.

The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius

Guest post from Sydney Kown

I have two young nephews, and they go crazy whenever "The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" comes on television. Whenever I babysit them, I make sure we watch this show on satelite tv, because I know how much they enjoy it.

I like this show, because it puts a positive spin on education for children. Sometimes, kids that like science and math can be ostracized by their peers. This show actually works against that type of stereotyping, and makes it look "cool" for kids to enjoy math and science. I know that ever since watching this program, my two nephews always talk about how much they want to be scientists. I enjoy watching the media actually be a positive influence in my nephews lives, rather than something that makes them feel inadequate.

Jimmy Neutron is the main character of this show, and he is always figuring out solutions to the problems he faces in each episode. He is portrayed as the ultimate genius, and I think he inspires young kids to reach their potential. The episode I watched was not only funny and charming, but had great educational value to it. My two nephews and me learned a lot about the field of chemistry, just by watching one episode of Jimmy Neutron! I highly recommend this program as an educational tool for motivating children to be interested in science and math.

Before It Was Cool

This is from guest blogger Larry Sheppard:

I started online classes when online classes were new and still taboo. Lately they are more of the norm and perfect for the working adult. I have taken math, algebra, psychology, ethics, and many other course online. We were able to log in with wildblue internet whenever we needed to study, take notes and even look at books.

We used wildblue North Dakota service which made it nice and easy. We had discussion questions we had to answer a few times a week. We posted comments, and had other students comment on what we thought or what the lesson plan was for that week. It's convenient and easy to be able to log in with wild blue whenever you need or want and still get your work done.

Most online classes like used use E books which is just something you download to your computer and have access to 24/7. You no longer have to haul around expensive and heavy books they are all available online. This was easy when assignments or labs were due. If you were not using the book the professor had labs set up to and and tutorials on how to use the labs and assignments.

One of the greatest features while taking the online classes and using satellite internet are the online lectures. You log in once a week into a virtual classroom and you you get lectured on the lesson for the week and you are able to ask questions. You can also go back during the week and replay it without taking a ton of notes.

Updates on Our Homeschooling Break and Summer School Progress

If you haven't read the "About Me" page on this site just yet, you may not realize that we're not currently homeschooling. The details explaining our (likely) temporary break from schooling from home are mentioned there. It's been the right choice for this season in our lives, but I do LOVE everything about homeschooling and hope to one day have my kids home again, where we can share the experience of learning together.

I wanted to update you all on our Summer School progress and share that my kids LOVE their Summer lessons (huge blessing!), which consist of just two classes, 4 times a week. They're only at the school for 2 hours a day and it's been a great blessing for all of us. My son who has Asperger's (high-functioning autism)  is taking math and art, and his little sister is taking computer and then second hour joins her brother for the art class. They love being around other kids, keeping busy with activities, and getting out of the house (sorta breaks up the day).

It was a big decision for us to send them to school for these 5 weeks, but I'm soooo glad we did. The cost was $180 per child for 2 courses, so we spent $360, which didn't come easy. We're making less income this year than last... a first for us! It's an economy thing, but I'm not going to complain... at least my husband still has a job (knock on wood)!

My daughter is enjoying her classes so much that she informed me last night she'd like 3 classes next year! Hmmmm.... not sure about that one. They offer a cooking class, which she wishes she could have taken this year. I don't have issue with that, but sending them out 3 hours a day, might be too much for me and them. After all, this is Summer and I think we should "break" more than we should school... I'd also like to spend some time with them. As for the "break" part...  I know there are a lot of strong opinions on this, but I really want my kids to have some real downtime before the start of school in August. Also... 3 classes would mean another $180 if they both took an extra class, so probably not going to happen! lol

One of the coolest benefits to my children having teachers other than me is that I can learn new teaching strategies, ideas for art projects, and learning games... then I can share them here! lol And uh, that's just what I've been doing and will continue to do so stay tuned!

Finally, forgive the ads on my site. Blogging is my primary work from home job and I have a hard time turning down work, even though it doesn't always seem relevant to the theme of homeschooling. I don't accept advertising from anyone promoting anything inappropriate, suspicious, or scammy in nature. Thanks to products purchased through my bookstore (link under header) I was able to buy my hubby a Father's Day gift... so many thanks for that! Commissions aren't high, but they do add up.

Take care my friends and God bless!

Seniors Making Money

Guest blog from John Goodson.

Senior citizens are using the Internet for a lot more these days than to purchase supplies for their hearing aids. Its really easy to order a Miracle ear hearing aid and have it delivered right to the front door. Senior citizens have no excuse to not be able to take advantage of the Internet. They are offered classes at the local community colleges and at their local community centers. This is a good thing because they need to be computer savvy.

By having a computer in their home, senior citizens can earn money. They can just sign onto a couple of the sites online to take surveys at home. This is a great opportunity for them to earn some extra cash in addition to the other income that they may have coming in. It's also a great way for them to have a way to spend their time when they are just sitting at home.

Another good thing for senior citizen to do with the computer is to use it to write articles. Article writing is a great opportunity for senior citizens to sign onto the Internet and share some of the knowledge that they have experienced over the years and a great opportunity for them to be able to make extra money on the side.

Senior citizens who enjoy playing poker, this is a great opportunity to get on the Internet and make some cash playing poker. The senior citizen can do a search and they will find that there are many websites that host poker playing tournaments. There is some hard cash to be earned from this game, it's also a great way to connect with people all over the world.

Cursive Name Art

I'm sharing this idea a bit prematurely as I don't have a photo to share, but if you're looking for a creative assignment while practicing cursive name writing this project is for you!

My kids are taking a Summer school art course and both brought home their name art masterpieces yesterday. I loved the idea and until they told me what I was looking at didn't even realize they're names were the basis for their creations. Once this was pointed out to me, I could completely read their names... which were written lengthwise on a folded sheet of paper, using the fold as a starting and stopping point. They then transfer the image to the other side of the fold, so the names are mirroring one another.

The final process is to color or decorate the name, filling in the voids or spaces as they desire. The end result is really cool and completely unique!

So, I WILL be posting photos. That process takes me awhile as I have a stubborn computer, but I'll get both names loaded so you can take a gander.

I'm sure your kids will get a kick out of this assignment! Mine sure did. :)

Finding Safe Driving and Mobility Equipment for Disabled People

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of NMEDA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Sixteen years ago my grandmother was diagnosed with ALS. Just two months after her diagnosis, she'd completely lost her mobility. Only 6 months prior, she'd shown no outward signs of weakness or illness whatsoever... driving everyday, volunteering in her neighborhood, mowing her own lawn, attending events with friends and enjoying the first few years of her retirement. So when her body started to decline, we were not only unprepared emotionally for what we were witnessing, but we had no clue where to turn for advice on how to help her maintain some level of independence. We also struggled with how to keep her comfortable.

We didn't have NMEDA (National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association) back then to turn to for help in providing our loved one with the safe modifications to and within her vehicle and home. All we knew at the time was that we needed to buy or borrow a wheelchair, which she had a lot of trouble managing. It was also hard to make her home (that of an able-bodied woman), fit her chair, which was wide and clumsy.

Don't find yourself in that difficult position... a NMEDA dealer can assist you and give you the peace of mind that your loved one has been given the best possible information and equipment to consider for the situation at hand. They offer both Dealers and what they call Quality Assurance Program Dealers... which is the only nationally recognized accreditation program for the Adaptive Mobility Equipment Industry.

If you're looking to modify a vehicle... NMEDA offers guidance on wheelchair adapted vehicles. You know they'll fit your needs as fully as is possible because they offer a "real life" in person assessment designed to insure you end up with modifications best suited for your lifestyle. After all, disabled individuals have different needs and abilities to take into account.   NMEDA understands your loved one is unique and not stamped from a mold... it's for this reason, they caution against purchasing online or by catalogue.

If you have a loved one confined to a chair, please take a moment to search out a local "qualified" NMEDA dealer... a non-profit trade association. Simply type in your zip code on their homepage and find the nearest dealer, available to help you provide a new level of independence to that special someone. We have one just 5 minutes away, which is something I'll tuck in my memory bank... because you just never know what life might throw your way and who wants to go down that road alone? Not I!

Jaden Smith Karate Kid Review from a Homeschooler's Perspective

Last night we had the privilege of viewing a special screening of Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan in "The Karate Kid". Going out as a family is always a real treat, especially when you're on a tight budget and can't always afford to take the family out. That said, we don't see a whole lot of movies in the theaters outside of those offered as a part of a special priced Summer package the kids and I take advantage of each year. That package doesn't include new movies by the way! lol So, for us to see a movie before it's even officially released is what you could call HUGE!

We were given four passes by our children's TaeKwonDo instructor (one of the reasons we have no money! lol), so daddy came home from work early enough that we were able to go together, arriving a good 2 hours before showtime to insure we'd have a seat. In order to insure a full house, they always hand out more passes than there are spots available and it would have really stunk to have had the kids excited to see this movie only to be turned away at the door! lol

The experience of seeing a special screening was interesting and a first for me. Security was tight... bags were checked for any type of recording device and even cell phones were not permitted inside the theater. As we watched the movie unfold men in suits paced up and down the isles alongside the theater walls, watching to insure no one had snuck in a recording device. Weird yes, but totally worth it. lol

So, ok... my review is generally positive. Before I go any further though, I should tell you that I'm what they call very conservative... especially with what I allow my children to see. I'm not one for giving my kids access to watching promiscuous behavior, not in adults or children (can't believe I even have to say that, but um) and I HATE movies containing foul language. I never have understood what the point of that was... so many good movies have been contaminated... in my ever so misunderstood mind. I also am not one to appreciate a lot of violence. With all that said I'll give this movie a 4.25 out of a possible 5. Here are my reasons:

This movie was awesome, yet given it's a karate movie, there was  a lot of fighting. Yes, I actually just wrote that. lol I mean, you know that going into it... what was I expecting? However, and this is BIG... I loved the overall message of the movie. Your kids will get a positive lesson on respect, earning respect, maintaining respect, and what complete lack of respect for others looks and feels like. There's a great message to those being bullied and those doing the bullying... which most of us avoid to a great degree by homeschooling, but it's still a lesson to be learned.

The acting was exceptional. Despite the fighting scenes, there was no blood, which although very unrealistic, I for one appreciated. The movie contained a good balance of drama, humor, and kept our interest until the very last scene. I'd say Jaden Smith is well on his way to following in his father's professional acting footsteps... which just in case you don't already know is Will Smith. Jackie Chan is always amazing... so you won't be disappointed there... that is unless you're expecting to see a lot of action from him. He's only involved in one fighting scene in the entire movie, but it's a crack up!

The only part of this movie that I didn't approve of, and again I'm tight when it comes to just about everything... was a dancing scene where the young love interest of the main character cut loose. It sorta felt wrong to me watching some of her moves. They were slightly suggestive, which just feels wrong when watching a young girl (a child) dance. It wasn't horrible, but sorta like what you see in dancing schools these days. If you've seen how most children's dance classes operate nowadays you already know what I'm talking about. They have the girls dance like adults. Can't we just let them be kids?

What did my kids think of the movie? My 9 year old son gave the movie a 5 and my 7 year old daughter a 9, lol... that's on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being best. I asked her again and she stuck by her answer... so 9 it is! lol

Hope this review helps you decide whether to go see this movie. I do recommend it. It could have so easily received 5 stars, but for that one scene... why does there always have to be an element that could have been omitted, or not filmed at all... one totally not necessary in producing a high quality movie that makes my eyes roll?

Thanks to Columbia Pictures for giving us these passes and a great experience! Hope there will be a sequel... and uh, more passes would be cool! lol

Free eBooks... Over 100,000 Titles to Choose From

Free... are you serious? Why YES I am!

Project Gutenburg doesn't even require you register with their site in order to download previously published (on paper) books, which are now available digitally in ePub, Mobipocket, HTML or simple text formats. How cool is that?

Why are they free? In the US, they're 100% free to you because their copyrights have expired. If you live outside the US, you'll have to check to see whether the copyright laws for your country permit a free download.

This is an AWESOME resource for homeschooling families.  It's amazing what we can find for free if we take the time to look! At the same time, so many offers for free products and services often come with strings and when you're online you might find yourself downloading a virus... so caution should always be practiced. Gutenburg is SAFE and Secure. There are absolutely no malicious downloads, scammers trying to milk your wallet, or even advertisements to distract you from why you came. They do however accept donations, if you're so inclined. They also welcome users to  help them digitize more books or help them record audio books.

Happy reading!
