Teaching Children Pre-K Through 3rd Grade Mandarin Chinese

If you're wishing to teach your young children Mandarin Chinese, check out this serious of books and audio CD's perfect for a homeschooling family.

The text in the Mandy and Pandy series is read in both English, by a native English speaker and in Chinese, by a native Chinese speaker, insuring your children will learn to speak the language with proper pronunciation. If you're not a native speaker yourself, you of course realize how essential it will be for your children to hear Mandarin Chinese spoken in its proper dialect.

Chinese for Kids with Mandy and Pandy is a fun, colorful, and effective learning tool for families planning on visiting China... or for families wishing to simply introduce their children to a foreign language while they're still young.

Homeschooling Autistic Children.... the Whens, Whys, and Woe is Me

I've once again been fighting with myself on if and when to bring my son back home from public school. If you've followed this blog for very long, or if you've read the "about me" page here on The Homeschooling Blog, you know we sent our high-functioning autistic son to public school over 2 years ago.

He's had many ups and downs since attending a brick and mortar school, but overall I'd say it's been a positive experience. He's made friends (something he'd never done before as he is socially awkward), cooperates well with teachers and other students and has almost all A's while attending a regular classroom. However.... he's an emotional roller coaster. Worrying excessively about friends (mainly about loosing friends). He worries about homework, about changes at school (change is a horribly difficult thing for children on the autism spectrum), and then there's worry about his pace. It takes him considerably longer to complete tasks compared to that of his peers.  He misses a lot at school because he's finishing assignments other children completed hours or days before. He hates art class. Can you imagine? He never has time to finish a project. Walking through the halls of his school are walls filled with artwork. My son's are either nowhere to be found, or they're only partially completed. Again... not what he wants to be noticed for.

He knows he's different. He knows why he's different. He worries that other children will abandon him when they too realize he's different. At 10 years of age, it's starting to happen. His friends are getting older and maturing. My son is getting older and remains emotionally immature. Such is life with Asperger's Syndrome. I'm really unsettled by the anxiety in my boy lately. He's so fearful of the changing social situations at school as he ends his 4th grade year and begins preparing for his last year of elementary school.

Tonight's concern is about the potential for losing his best friend. This particular boy has been a good friend for 2 years now (his first "best friend" and honesty first "real" friend). Kids with Asperger's don't make friends easily. I'd prayed hard for him to make a good friend.... and there he was. What a blessing! A great kid who loved my son, and felt a mutual "best friend" connection. Apparently this boy has been pulling away from my boy recently. It's hard to comfort a 10 year old who senses a friend is drifting away when they know that "most" kids see them as nerdy, annoying, and strange. My son is in fact awkward, has a heavy stutter, doesn't know how to talk about any area of interest other than Pokemon and is highly emotional. He finds out tomorrow if his best friend will be in the same classroom with him at school next year. I'd requested the school place them together, but there are no guarantees. I've asked my boy to pray for God's will... I've done the same and I've explained that God's will doesn't always match our own, but that He has a plan for each of us... a perfect plan. This hasn't brought the results I'd hoped for. With my warm motherly advice I've wiped just as many tears from my son's face as without it.

I know that this type of emotional baggage is a real and normal part of life... and it isn't in and of itself a good reason for bringing him home again anymore than concerns about socialization are in and of themselves a good reason to send a child to a brick and mortar school. There is so much to consider. There are no easy answers. I just worry about his emotional well being. He suffers from high-anxiety and takes medication... which doesn't help all that much. It's made him less aggressive (something he only struggles with at home, not at school) and helps him sleep at night, but he's still a worrier to the point that he misses A LOT of school with stomach issues and headaches. He freaks out about the amount of homework he has... even 2 pages seems to be too much. He faces any academic challenge after school hours with tears, frustration, and even anger.

I sometimes wonder if it is time to bring him home again, give him a different curriculum to follow and let him go at his own pace? He's likely suffering from sensory overload at school. Maybe I could give him a better environment for learning? Then again... one of our reasons for sending him to school in the first place was he refused to let me teach him anything. Sigh... by the time we'd started 2nd grade my son wanted to fight me on every lesson. I couldn't even get him to pick up a pencil.

He's a bright boy... so whether we homeschool or not, it's hard to know where to draw a line academically. Do we let him fall behind his grade level if it keeps him emotionally healthier, or... with a little pushing keep him parallel with his peers (sorta),  at the price of family friction, stomach problems, migraines, and horrible meltdowns? Even as I ask this question I realize how foolish I sound.

He's an awesome boy. I hate to see him suffer. If he weren't a special needs child I'd say this is all part of growing up, it will help him build character, and he'll be ok. With my boy... I'm not sure he will be. I could really use prayer. I need guidance, reassurance, and a lot of sleep. It's been a long week. Thanks for listening (or should I say reading).

We Love Bouncy Castles!

What kid doesn't love a good bouncy house or bouncy castle? What mom doesn't love watching her kids wear themselves out while at the same time having the time of their lives? Then there's this... how many times have you hosted a play date and had kids running wild through your home?

I've had daydreams about renting a huge bouncy castle for my son's birthday party and even a few wild ideas about buying one and renting it out! lol If we had the room, I'd consider purchasing a
bouncy castle to keep in the basement. Not the huge monster castles you see at carnivals and church events, but something moderately sized for my little monkeys to get their sillies out in.

http://www.fun4kids.co.uk/ has a great selection of bouncy castles to choose from. If you're in the market for a trampoline, they have those too! We've thought about trampolines for the back yard to give our kids yet another way to get some valuable exercise.

Wholesale Furniture Brokers Website Review

I'm taking a few minutes out of my day to shine a little light on a fabulous online retailer of fine furniture, area rugs, bedding, and other must haves for your home. As a mom who would love to one day own "real" furniture... meaning furniture other than that of our college apartments, I can oh so appreciate the abounding beauty, charm, and style at Wholesale Furniture Brokers (GoWFB.com). lol Wishin' I had the blessing of my husband to do some serious renovating around this house! After a few coats of paint, some new hardwood floors (so tired of carpenting), and a HUGE yard sale, I'd be doing some serious shopping at Wholesale Furniture Brokers.

I've found the perfect bedroom set for my son, multiple area rugs that would make our dining room and living  pop with color and style, and bedding that would add warmth and sunshine to our master bedroom. I love warmth and sunshine... don't you?

What I find especially appealing about this online retailer's website is the easy navigation, product photos and information, SALE PRICES!, FREE SHIPPING SALE!, NO SALES TAX SALE!, and the abundance of their inventory. I've been to a few online shopping sites with a rather unimpressive inventory. GoWFB.com offers more than enough product variety to keep my eyes busy for hours. lol The only challenge I have now is trying to decide what I like best of all! That's the kind of challenge I can live with.

If you're in the market for new furniture for any room of your home, or for a new bedding set or area rug, visit Wholesale Furniture Brokers before May 13th to take advantage of their free shipping and sales tax sale. That's not something you see everyday! At least nowhere I shop!

Have You Ordered Mother's Day Flowers?

It really ISN'T too late to order your mom flowers for Mother's Day. Seriously... you still have time if you get on that ever important task asap. So, watcha waiting for my friend? In fact, there are still deals to be found. 1800flowers coupon codes are floating through cyber space waiting to be secured! I just found a coupon code good for 18 roses for only $19.99. Not too shabby!

If you realize too late that you've missed the boat... well, that doesn't mean you shouldn't still send flowers! If you order flowers to be delivered on Monday, you could surprise mom at work. She'd then have a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers sitting at her desk or work area for her co-workers to oodle and wow after. I'm a firm believer in better late than never, and it's the thought that counts. I also believe in beautiful flower arrangements. The more color and variety the better!

So... how much time have you spent actively seeking Mother's Day Flower Delivery Deals? You're not really going to pick up something at the local convenient store or discount market on your way to mom's house tomorrow are you? Not to knock those stores, but you don't know how fresh those flowers are. When I've bought them from certain stores I've always been disappointed with how little time the bouquet stayed fresh looking. We're talking maybe 2 days... sometimes 3. Not to make my husband feel bad, but the roses he gave me for Valentine's Day only lasted 2 days before the blooms started to droop.

You can find beautiful flowers without breaking your wallet. I personally never buy anything online without first looking for a way to cut my costs. I'm a coupon code seeking junkie. It just doesn't make sense not to look, since coupon codes are free for the finding and often times equate to deep discounts and/or free shipping. If 1 800 Flowers coupons are something you're after, take a moment or two from reading my blog (but please come back!) and see what awesome deals you can snatch up!

Do your ordering today! Even if you're reading this after Mother's Day, please celebrate your mom with a gorgeous bouquet of breath-taking color and beauty. You know she's worth it!

Summer Plans for Me and My Clan

For the kids:

  • Kids will be taking Summer school classes from late May through the end of June. This will fill 2 hours of our morning and give the kids an opportunity to be creative (art class) and review skills (math and computer classes). It will also give me time to walk and re-energize my battery on the track outside the middle school hosting the classes.
  • Swimming
  • Bible School (1 week in July)
  • Kumon for my son (daily assignments, 2 visits to the center each week as we've been doing since December).
  • I'll be teaching them to grow and care for their own herbs. This will be new for me too! lol
  • Playdates with friends
For me:
  • I'll be starting a new blog on eating Gluten and Dairy Free! This is a new journey for our family as we experiment with this diet that has helped many children on the autism spectrum. Hopefully it will help our son too!
  • I hope to create a couple cake decorating tutorials to sell as PDF's.
  • I'm hoping to find some writing jobs.
  • Perhaps a Summer job. I really need the income, but not sure if it's the right answer for my family. My son and my husband have been butting heads a lot lately.
  • Playdates for me! Lunches and evening walks with friends, movie nights with my Bible study.
I don't have any other ideas. lol My brain actually hurts a little just making this list! It's been a long Spring and I think I'm ready to sleep in for a few days before I think about doing anything constructive, healthy, or ambitious. lol

West Palm Beach Drug Treatment for Drug and Alcohol Abuse

Do you know someone addicted to prescription drugs? Perhaps pain killers, mood stabilizers or sleeping pills? Can I just tell you that this kind of addiction can happen to anyone, at any stage of life, regardless of race, ethnicity or income level? The drugs don't care. I've seen it happen to people in our own family and just yesterday a good friend shared the frustrations of watching her mom sink under the weight of prescription drugs. Medications intended for good, that she's now taking in excess to numb her senses. My friend feels hopeless, while her mom seems content with her choices... including not looking for a job, staying in bed all day, and watching her debt skyrocket out of control.

Watching someone you love suffer with any type of addiction, whether it be drugs or alcohol is painful. There's really only one answer to addiction... that answer of course is treatment. Getting your loved one to a  treatment center is no small battle. I think most adults will hit rock bottom, with pride completely broken before they'll admit they need help. It's scary to be that person... knowing you're out of control. No one wants to feel they need to be taken care of. No adult wants to feel a lack of independence. Knowing you'll be separated from something you've come to depend on for comfort is terrifying. Not only the drugs, but also your home, your schedule, the comfort of sleeping in your own bed, and making your own decisions about what you need to get you through the day.

I can't even imagine being in those shoes, but would be naive if I thought it couldn't happen to me. How many of you know someone who started taking prescription pain killers for a bad back and later lost their job or their marriage after an inability to stop taking the medication? Maybe they couldn't focus at work, became confrontational, or stopped caring about things that were once important to them. When drug abuse is present, everyone notices. Eventually, everyone close to the abuser will know something is wrong... which is one reason many abusers hide from loved ones. Recovery can seem insurmountable for someone suffering from addiction and takes commitment.

What if your loved one is in their 70's? What if they're only 19? The West Palm Beach drug treatment center actually considers not only the patients age, but also their gender when customizing a drug treatment program. I'd never thought about how treatment styles might be different for people at different stages of life, but it makes complete sense.

After all, if a teenager has an addiction to alcohol, her addiction could have blossomed out of peer pressure to drink, while a man in his 40's might be addicted to drinking as a result of having difficulty coping with life. Sometimes it's easier (or so we think) to numb our senses, or take a mental vacation rather than face the difficulties life throws at us. A soccer mom might have a different reason all together for what she does behind closed doors. It takes an expert to break through the addiction and restore normalcy and health to victims of addiction.

Hanley Center Programs cater to everyone. Can I just say I believe this statement? lol They have treatment programs for men and women, young and seasoned citizens, spiritual care, and wellness care. I think the key word here is "care".We need to continue to "care" for those we love, just as we'd want to know they "care" for us, should we ever fall ill.

    Don't Forget Mega SwagBucks Friday!

Search & WinEvery Friday is MEGA BUCKS DAY! Be sure you're using the Swagbucks search engine to do all your Internet searching. Check their Facebook and Twitter pages and their blog for special Swag codes for even more bucks!

I've earned nearly $20 in Amazon.com gift cards through Swagbucks in just a couple months time. All for doing something I do everyday anyway. Searching the web! Simply searching within their search engine gives me yet one more avenue for free gaining FREE stuff! I love stuff. I know I'm not supposed to love stuff, but we all have our struggles don't we? lol

Actually, I think what I love is getting for free something my family needed anyway. Amazon.com has TONS of gluten-free, dairy-free foods (all with consumer reviews, which is priceless to a mom trying to please the appetite of a growing 10 year old boy). With my son on a challenging new diet, which by the way is rather expensive, getting free gift gift cards to Amazon is nothing short of AMAZING!

I've been offline much of the day, but have a bit of research to do tonight on autism, autism diets, and ways to challenge the brains of my kiddos (and yours) over the Summer months. So... perhaps my Swagbucks account will see some serious accumulation over the next few hours?? Only time will tell!

Money Saving Moms Choose Zenni Optical

Not only am I a Zenni mom, a growing number of my momma friends are too. If you've followed this blog for any length of time at all, you know I am not in the best place financially. I'm not in the worst either, and that might be because I'm always looking for a deal... a deal that doesn't cost me quality. That combination can be a challenge to find.

Last year after reading multiple positive and even raving reviews on the web, I decided to give Zenni a try. After all... I'd had a local jeweler weld my son's titanium (and over-priced frames) for the 3rd time in less than 12 months time. The welding set me back $35 a pop. Are you kidding me already? Would you believe he's had his Zenni frames for nearly a year and I've never had to repair them? Oh, but it gets even better than that. The Zenni frames with prescription lenses were only $39! No, I'm so not joking.

We're talking about prescription eyeglasses for less than $40. In fact, they offer frames with prescription lenses for even less than that. We added a couple features such as anti-glare to keep him more comfortable. Here's the amazing thing if you're truly in a budget crunch. Zenni offers complete prescription eyeglasses starting at just $6.95 a pair! That's not much more than a gallon of gas these days (unfortunately) or a fancy iced coffee from Starbucks (again unfortunately).

Isn't it sweet to know there are still good values to be found? :)

New Edition of... Giveaways Across the Blogosphere (of interest to homeschoolers)

    Welcome to The Homeschooling Blog!
I've become quite the giveaway groupie lately, meaning I follow closely blogs who frequently offer goodies to random readers. Why? Because I'm broke and love to get things in the mail! teehee If I find a giveaway offering gift cards all the sweeter... who doesn't love to shop on someone else's dime?

Since March when all my giveaway silliness began, I've earned somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 in gift cards, cash, and products I needed anyway! Add that to the nearly $20 I've earned from using Swagbucks as my search engine of choice, and I've been able to purchase my son a few essentials for his new gluten free, dairy free diet. Talk about expensive! Not only does his food cost more than ours, but I had to buy him his own can opener, skillet, and cooking utensils to avoid the risk of cross contamination in the kitchen. One little grain of gluten could set us back

We still have more yet to buy, so I'll be continuing to hunt down those awesome bloggers who are eager to increase blog traffic via giveaways and those who've been approached by sponsors wishing to get the word out about a great product or service. The web can be such a sweet sweet place!

In the spirit of giving, I've done a bit of digging and found a handful of giveaways I imagine might be of interest to the homeschooling community:

    Homeschooling Planner Giveaway
Educating Layton is giving one lucky winner a free homeschooling planner, valued at $20. The winner will be announced tomorrow... Friday, May 6th... so enter now! All you have to do is leave her a comment and an email addy, should your name be randomly drawn. :)

The Mystery of History Volume III Special Pkg
Homeschool Giveaways and Freebies is offering this great history package from Bright Ideas Press, retailed at $110. Once again... enter NOW! Winner will be drawn this Saturday, May 7th.

$25 Hearts at Home Gift Certificate (to their online store)
Winner will be drawn from Facebook comments on May 9th!

    JCPenny $25 Gift Card
Ok... so not exclusively homeschool, but this giveaway is being offered by a homeschooler and who couldn't use $25 to put towards some clothes for the kids, or a pair of much needed shoes for you? This giveaway is being offered my Molding Minds Homeschool who will randomly choose their winner on May 20th.

ABCmouse.com Early Learning Academy 3 Boys and a Dog is offering a free membership to the ABCmouse.com early learning site, with a retail value of $95.40. This giveaway ends May 17th.

That should keep you busy for awhile. :) I'll post more giveaways soon, as I find them across the blogsphere! If you'd like to share a homeschooling giveaway on my blog, please let me know via email (see my contact information). I also welcome the opportunity to host giveaways, should you have a product or service of interest to homeschoolers.

    Blessings!
